| LYSERGICALLY YOURS by Frank Duff An interesting novella centered around three characters and the drug LSD. This is not merely some drug powered adventure story. Rather through a collection of intriguing characters Duff creates a world, that by itself is a pleasure to experience, and then uses it as the base for some fairly out-there sci-fi (if not almost fantasy) plot developments. If you are a fan of the style of Neal Stephenson you probably will dig this book, likewise if you have a mild interest or some experience in Acid culture (unless you take it ever so seriously). This book probably worked best for me because I'm young, dig a story with a clever hacker in it, used to dig chemistry and enjoy stories with interesting characters and a modern (as in contemporary) style. A serious read this is not but it is a consistantly enjoyable journey that, if anything, finishes a little too soon. Also, probably best to overlook the poem at the beginning - its tone does not really match the rest of the novel, so don't let it scare you off by getting your sense of Sensibility all bent out of shape. Best of all its available for download free as an eBook (i.e. text file) from the author's website. If you want you can also buy it hardcopy (though its distribution seems limited) or otherwise you should be able to make a donation directly to the author if you feel so inclined. Originally seen reviewed on Slashdot, reviewed here 9 July 2004. [Note this review is just a test - I'll probably be revising its content and formatting in the near future when I work a few other things out.] |
